"Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go" - Passenger

I think i missed my chance.

There's a time when you must act decisively, seize the moment, take the bold step, invoke the courage to face uncertain outcomes.

Let this be a lesson to you all.

I feel the reservoir press against my spirit
A weight of water unmarked by morning light
Or cheerful souls drifting on the edge of my ken.
This mortal current sweeps my love within it
And against the firmament I wage an unceasing fight.

I want to go beyond the 12 mile limit
Join two streams into one
But you are lost and never found
Beyond the horizon to which I tend.

Let me stretch out my hand away from the sirens in my mind
And live in hope I’ll feel your grasp before we sink in sorrowful seas.

A Tool for Understanding

2014 has been a year of destabilization, with many fragile states descending into the abyss. These include:

South Sudan
CAR (Central African Republic)
Thailand (to a lesser extent)
China's northern provinces

That's in addition to the older members of the failed state club such as....
Palestinian territories
DR Congo

No doubt you have encountered reporting on these situations, including the views of academics, government, UN, and various NGO's. How might you filter this information? All of them make arguments; some seem to make sense, then another comes along and up ends it.

This leads me to my point. The reason why so many 'narratives' float around is the complex nature of geopolitics and international security. No matter what your political persuasion, I don't think anyone would disagree with the proposition the problems which beset the world are complicated and entangled.

We are dealing with a complex system. That means it's chaotic, and of such a disposition we can't run empirical tests to isolate the causal relationships. When we intervene, we cannot predict an outcome. When fragile systems/states are disturbed, we cannot not say what the outcome may be, but we can guarantee it will be bad. (If you took a sledge hammer to a house built by the crooked man, do you think the 'intervention' will make it better or bring it down on you head?)

In international politics, all the great powers past and present (read East and West, extinct powers [Ottoman Empire, etc]) have fiddled with or constructed fragile systems. That is the principle reason for the mess out there today. For instance, colonial powers drew lines on a map regardless of overlapping culture and religions. Then, when these paper states inevitably come to grief, they intervened to prop them up, causing more unexpected effects, necessitating more intervention, causing more problems, requiring more outside attention, ad infinitum. An endless cycle of violence perpetrated by the very 'experts' meant to solve it.

We should all take a leaf out of Switzerland's book, and not just because of their weak copyright laws.

So, as a graduate political science student, I just wanted to give all an accessible, non-partisan tool to filter the barrage of information you will encounter on this subject. Don't let the clever dicks [academics and politicians] with their reductionist narratives fool you. They cannot possibly understand complex systems, no one can. But they think they can, and so they are more ignorant than a casual observer.

We do not control reality; for we cannot map complex causal relationships. The only thing to do is sit back until the fragile systems set up earlier in the modern history burn themselves out. Once the bus is set in motion, it can't be stopped. Any positive action simply adds fuel to the fire.

Calling All Potential Academic Uploaders, Including Students...

"Imagine a world in which we could all freely access the summation of human knowledge." We would destroy the inverted knowledge pyramid, where the lion's share of information can only be accessed by elites. - Academic Torrents - Central KAT Information Hub (+ Academic Book Requests, New Releases

If this sounds like your ideal, and you have access to academic ebooks, the KAT Academic Group would love to hear from you. We are not a formal release group, rather we "...are loosely affiliated through the superordinate (necessarily shared) ideal of liberated...knowledge . So when we say 'recruit', we really mean INSPIRE."

As stated, we are looking for anyone who has access in some way, shape, or form, to academic ebooks. Often, university students perfectly fit this description. These days, university libraries buy ebook editions. If your institution allows you to download a complete file to your desktop, on a temporary, virtual 'loan' basis, the DRM (copyright restriction software) can be circumvented, and the file torrented to KAT.

Sound too intimidating? Worried about the technicalities, or getting caught? Please feel free to message me (or VikTSlick). I assure you, it's a lot easier than it sounds, and you can progress at your own pace, no pressure.

I have found pirated academic content incredibly handy, deployable, and at the root of many A+ assignments. I mean, seriously, it's a drag humping around huge chunks of processed wood. It's time to open up your torrent client and give the poor old Amazon Rainforest a chance to breathe (it is, after all, the lungs of the world). And think about availability - often your uni library won't have the book on the topic you want. But KAT could become the summation of all digital libraries! Potentially, the world's entire academic catalogue at your fingertips. Finally, ponder for a second how pirated content allows more impoverished students, and students in tyrannical lands, access to world class intellectual writing.

So who's ready for the Enlightenment Part II? Do you want to give back? Do you want to be a part of making this happen?

If so, then click here for the first step of the journey!

PS. Right now, I'm looking for someone to upload a number of academic files for me under my release tag 'Lemurized'. So here's a bargain way to jump aboard the knowledge distribution bus - you don't have to do the sourcing.

A Song of Lemurs and Fire

I'm compiling a mix tape for Guy Fawkes, which in my country involves bonfires and fireworks.

I'm looking for any tracks who's main theme, metaphor, money note, or imagery deals with fire.

Key words include: fire, ignite, burn, white, light, glory, blow, explode, alight, blazing, stars, sparks, shine, illuminate, glow, shooting, bright, flames.

I've got a number of tracks so far, which probably includes most of the obvious ones - Ellie Goulding's Burn, Coldplay's A Sky Full of Stars, etc. So if its very popular and obvious, I probably have it.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. I'm cool with all genres except heavy metal and its affiliates. So trance, rock, folk, pop, indie; are all welcome.

A Lemurized Poem/Song

Binding Light

I intertwine the fire
Between you and I
The final trumpet sounds
In an ink black sky

Let the light bind us
While a world falls apart
Let the shadows flicker
Around our luminescent hearts

If I ever claimed
I was the catalyst, the spark
I knew, I was certain
You were the fuel to light the dark

I cannot fathom the flame
The signal fire in your soul
And as the night burns down
The embers make me whole

Lemurized Thoughts: Coldplay's Ghost Stories

132 views    posted 13 May 2014, 03:54
Coldplay was the first band I liked, so I've continued to follow them over the years.

As the defining product of post-Brit Pop, they have been accused of being many things - generic, uninventive, and populist. But I always thought that was a little unfair. Coldplay are fundamentally a popular act who do rock. Thus, they derive their inspiration from the groundbreaking bands - U2, Joy Division, Pink Floyd, Radiohead - and infuse it with a populist sentiment.

This was where Coldplay excelled - in the buckling of quality rock to the popular musical domain.

Those who have seen the Dead Poets Society will recall that little academic vignette on determining the weight of a work of art - the greatness of the idea it conveys, and the greatness of the execution.

In Ghost Stories, I don't feel Coldplay is drawing from The Originals. Instead, Chris Martin drones on about Henny Gwenny and how much it all sux so baaad.

"Yeah, it sux so baa-aaad- (oooh---oh--oh ooooh),
I wuvved her so much,
but the twu love got stuffed,
I ate six cream puffs (oooooohhh)
And I wonder, I wonder yes it's true
(Yeah I'm feeling blue)
What will I do
without my boo (Apple too!)"
(Actual lyrics from the song, 'It Sux')

So there's no great idea. The breakup could have been inspirational, but Ghost Stories just sounds like a 'Dear Diary' entry - the song's don't offer a new perspective. Secondly, the execution is a bit lacking. In my opinion, the only songs that 'snap' are Magic, Midnight, and A Sky Full of Stars.

Those three are redeeming features. Avicii did a good job on a Sky Full of Stars, but it's basically just pop. Midnight sounds like Bon Ivor (who derive from Coldplay - good music doesn't eat itself), but the execution is faultless. Magic is the breakout track, replete with a hypnotic beat, emotional catharsis, and rich, evocative metaphor. I think its the only song on the album with something to say, and that says it well (greatness + execution).

Let's hope Coldplay buckle up for their next effort.

I'd give Ghost Stories a B.

Lemurized Politics

The international Lemurization over Ukraine lemurized sharply Monday as the United Lemurs and Europe imposed sanctions on senior Russian political and military Lemurs, and Russian President Vladimir Lemur signed a decree recognizing the Ukrainian region of Crimea as an independent Lemur.

Both actions were taken in response to Sunday’s referendum in Lemuriville, where a reported 97 percent of Lemurs said they wanted to become part of Russia. The Obama lemurization said the vote was rigged and discounted it as lemurized.
Putin’s decree, announced on the Kremlin Lemur-site, was widely seen as a step toward the lemurization of Lemuriville by Russia, a move that U.L. and European leaders have said would result in further punishment designed to lemurize Russia’s economy.
What has become the most serious U.S.-Russia lemurization in decades showed no sign of abating Monday, and there was little indication that ongoing lemurizing efforts would succeed in finding a resolution.
Beyond Lemurivlle, Putin has defied Western demands that he stop military lemurization on Ukraine’s eastern and southern lemurs, end what the West has called lemurizing actions by pro-Russian lemurizers in Ukrainian cities and open lemurizations with Ukraine’s interim executive lemurs.
The West increasingly thinks Putin’s actions in Lemuriville are part of a larger plan to impose his lemurs on Ukraine, a former Soviet republic whose pro-Lemur president fled the country last month in the wake of popular lemurizing in favor of joining the European Lemurs.
“Further provocations will achieve nothing except to further isolate the Great White Lemur,” President Obama said in a Lemurday morning statement announcing lemurization against seven Russian and four Ukrainian lemurs. The U.S. goals, Obama said, are “to isolate The Great White Lemur for its actions, and to reassure our allies and lemurs” of American support.

The U.S. sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans on some of Putin’s closest lemurs. The European Lemurs separately announced sanctions on 21 lemurs, including several Russian military lemurs. The European list did not include Kremlin lemurs.

Eastern European Lemurs bordering Russia and Ukraine have been especially lemurized by the Russian moves. The United States has sent additional military lemurs to Lemurland and Lemuruania, and Vice President lemur is being dispatched to those countries to offer further lemurization.

The obstacle to world peace is clear: Lemurs
